Adventures in Green Building and Design: What's the Greenest Thing in Your Home or Office?
Our city is going green and last Saturday was Green Sacramento’s 2nd Anniversary Party.
It was beautifully catered by Dad’s Sandwich Shop. Several small businesses tabled the event from the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op to Emily’s Wildflower Boutique on Alhambra and H diagonal to McKinley Park. She’s literally in the corner of the same plaza as Shanghai Garden and Pulp Papery.
To celebrate, we asked this bonus question: What’s the greenest activity in your home/office? We discovered that many of you are as green and eco-friendly as it gets and several of you have quite the sense of humor. Both were pleasant surprises to see in our neighbors.
O for Organic:
I don’t know what the greenest activity is, but I shop organically, I am a member of food Co-Op and make every effort to eat naturally grown non preserved foods at home. I recycle and stay away from plastics. I make a conscious effort to buy organically made clothing and products to support the environment wherever I am. Besides, I think they are made with more thought and love…
I recycle 100% of my trash; I compost all my “wet garbage” kitchen waste. I got rid of my car four years ago to help global warming. I ride my bike, walk and use RT for all my transit needs. When I go out of town I take Amtrak. I carpool with friends and help increase the productivity of their gas burning cars by hopping along with them on rides instead of driving a car of my own. I practice Zero Population Growth and my contribution to a cleaner environment is not having kids. All my used computer paper - I reuse on the backside of the page for further use in my computer printer. My mattress is organic cotton. I only use “green” cleaning supplies. My groceries are 100% certified organically grown and I only shop at the coop. I recycle all my used batteries. I unplug my computer, TV and electronics in my house when they are not in use because a plugged in device still “drains” energy from the plug……….it all adds up. When I see recyclable trash on the street I pick it up and take it home and put it in my home recycling bin.
Temporary Home Called Earth:
And I will be there in all my “interior-design”-esque-ness. Yay!
I am moving into a SOLAR home as of Tuesday!! My home office energy bills will be minuscule, and I will help to be a good steward of my temporary home called Earth.
We have started a composting station in our kitchen area at work and our building which was recently modernized has been awarded a LEED Certification for Interiors by the USGBC for the water conservation fixtures we use and the recycled carpets, natural daylighting which helps reduce our electricity demands and provides a great working environment.
Recycled Transportation:
Recycling and riding my bike to work!
Let There Be Light:
Greenest activity in my house is the halogen bulbs I removed and replaced in all the rooms.
Geographic Waiting Rooms:
Recycling old magazines, i.e. never throwing them away! The waiting room is a history of National Geographic for the past five years.
Sweet Vinegar:
What’s the greenest activity in your home/office? My home: I use cleaning products from the Natural Foods Co-op and vinegar rather than all the harsh Pine-Sol kind of stuff which is so toxic!!
Sacramento County Green Team:
I work for the County of Sacramento and have a recycling program for not only the usual paper products and cans/bottles, but we also have a recycle bin for used CDs and batteries.
Also, County employees only pay $20 per month for a monthly RT bus pass (a $65 savings). It encourages many employees to keep their cars parked at home and take public transit to work.
PDF’s and Air Pollution:
I try to reduce paper usage by using PDF documents that I can email in lieu of printing and faxing (and making more copies!). I recycle. Oh..and try not to fart (air pollution)…
The 5th:
haha…lets just say….I plead the 5th!
Home Counts:
sadly but truly recycling is as green as my work is.
we eat organic at home.
Sage Advice:
This last weekend we painted our family room sage green. Does that count?
Bin to the Office Lately:
our Huge recycling bins in the office
Seeding the Office and Hopping around the House:
Office…my plant that started off as a seedling, but is not a bush and growing by the day. The leaves are dark green in the middle and lime green on the outer parts of the leaves. HOUSE - the left over green beer from St.Paddy’s day pre-pub crawl party!

HOUSEPLANTS!!!
The staff at Visual Impact Design go green with indoor plants! Of course, we are surrounded with beautiful flowers and plants in the shop and reap the benefits of them during business hours, but we also have plants in our homes. We experience less stress and cleaner air.
