Gunther’s Quality Ice Cream Company was established in April 1940, owned and operated by Herman “Pop” Gunther and his wife, Iva.

The Gunther’s worked for a small firm that had opened a chain of ice cream stores throughout the Bay Area. When the company folded after 20 years, the Gunther’s decided to open their own business, but in a warmer climate. Feeling the idea would work on a one-store basis, the Gunther family (Pop Gunther, Iva and son Dick) moved to Sacramento and bought a little store on the corner of 5th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard.

The store was 12 feet wide and 40 feet long. Ice Cream was manufactured on the premise. Business was all carryout, hand-packed pints and quarts. The biggest volume was in ice cream cones, which sold for five cents each.

World War II changed the lifestyles of many people, and the Gunther’s business was strongly affected. Sugar and butterfat were rationed and Gunther’s was only allowed 80% of the monthly supplies used previously. Pop decision was to continue producing a quality product that his customers had come to expect. Because he made less ice cream, the store remained open on average of only 14 days per month.

After the war the Gunther’s decided to open a larger store. Wanting to stay in the neighborhood where they had been so successful, they opened a new store in 1949 at it’s present location, on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Franklin Blvd. This was the beginning of an even more successful time.

The Gunther’s operated the ice cream store until 1969. Mr. Gunther passed away in 1963 and their son Dick Gunther passed away in 1967. Mrs. Gunther, unable to continue operating the store, sold the business to Carl Buchell that year. (Iva Gunther passed away in 1989.)

The present owner of Gunther’s Ice Cream, Rick Klopp, was employed in 1969 at the age of 22 by Carl Buchell. Rick became manager of the operation 5 years later, and in 1974, Rick bought the business from Carl Buchell.

Rick and his wife Marlena continue to manufacture the product on the premise and maintain the quality based on the original recipes left by the Gunther family. Although some moderations have been made, the store looks almost the same as it did when it opened. Rick and Marlena are concerned with the high quality of their product and they work hard to ensure that quality. Gunther’s Ice Cream now sells ice cream to over 60 locations, in and adjacent to the Sacramento Area. QUALITY is still the foremost concern.

Menu/Specials

What gives Gunther's Ice Cream its superior taste?

.....a combination of high quality processing, the use of all natural ingredients, and the  rich percentage of the cream we use.

Gunther's Ice Cream uses a slow, hand-controlled "Batch Freezer Method" to process their ice cream. This method is similar to the hand cranked ice cream machines used in the early 1900's.

Gunther's Ice Cream is only available in Specialty Ice Cream outlets, top rated restaurants and selective companies.  It is not sold in any grocery stores or commercial outlets.

The Best in California

by lcodara, Wednesday 18 of November, 2009 (20:51:10)

If you have never had the Chance to taste Gunther's let me tell you, you are missing out on some great stuff. Right know I am hooked on the 50/50 freezes they are so refreshing you have to have the orange on the bottom with the vanilla Ice cream in the middle and strawberry on top. That is the way to experience a freeze. But you have to try the Ice cream there are too many flavors to say that I have a favorite. The environment is like an old soda shop all the kids working are great and have great customer service. I have been honored to be able to meet the owners you could not find 2 better people in this world they are the most gracious and humble people that I have ever meet. Gunther's keep up the good work. I LOVE IT!!!!! WHOOOOOOLEEEEE!!!!!!!!

Gunther's tis the best in the west

by patrick, Friday 30 of October, 2009 (15:29:29)

I was content eating ice cream from the local stores and mostly satisfied with the ice cream one would consume at the D.Q's and such, until I was enlightened by the real taste of ice cream.  All those years of wasting my time and mistreating my taste buds to substandard ice cream will haunt me forever.  I  have found Gunther's and we shall never part.  I have indulged on their chocolate malts and washed away the guilt.  I have savored their banana splits, brownie fudges, hot fudge sundaes, nutty cones, cheesecakes, mousse cakes, Oreo cakes and more.  So many chocolate covered treats that it is just overwhelming.  For those who are not into chocolate (sinners) choose over 40 or 50 flavors that are more suited to them. I add chocolate to them of course.  Their fruit freeze, so tasteful and simple, so refreshing I must admit  I eat without adding chocolate(but one can if one chooses)  My favorite is the strawberry and lemon.  The orange is also great as is the mango and grape and pineapple.  I wish they would bring back the raspberry because it too was fantastic.  No problem really as there are soooooo many flavor combination's to keep me going.  It is the fuel on which I survive.  I sometimes wonder what it would be like not to have tasted such a treat, to have continued eating the so called "ICE CREAM" so many of us do.  And you know what,  just try and wonder after you have tried Gunther's and you tell me.  Oh and by the way after eating it for 20 years I still am the same 150 pound 6 foot stud I used to be. ( I made up the stud part haha )  Check them out you won't be disappointed. Unless you have kids then it will be a constant  "can we go to Gunther's can we go to Gunther's" on and on. And that is the last of my review as I just drank the last of my Strawberry cheesecake milkshake.  Thank you Gunther's you fabulous little slice of heaven.
