The 2nd Saturday Clean-Up is a collaboration among several Oak Park partners, founded by Al Williamson of St. HOPE and Brian Fischer of 100minds Oak Park through the Oak Park Business Association in January, 2005.   Every 2nd Saturday morning, high school students and neighbors gather together to clean up some portion of Oak Park, often associated with the advent of a festival, march or other significant event, such as Dr. King's birthday or May's Celebrate Oak Park Festival.

Students hail from Sac Charter High School, Christian Brothers, and Hiram Johnson through County YouthWorks.  They receive community service credits where approved.   The Clean-Up is an exciting contribution to the integration of Oak Park inspired by the original efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   It brings kids from public, public charter, and private ecumenical schools together for 2 hours of cleaning and thinking.   Other schools and youth programs are welcome and elementary and junior high school children have participated.

Adult leaders come from the schools as well as 100minds, Oak Park Neighborhood Association, St. HOPE's Hood Corps, AmeriCorps, Hands On Sacramento, and the Oak Park Business Association.

Attracting an average of 40 to upward of 100 children each month, 2nd Saturday Clean-Up remains one of the most successful joint ventures in community building in Oak Park's history.   After 2 1/2 years, the program continues to evolve and hopefully will provide additional mentoring and internship opportunities for the students.

The Process:
The group gathers on the 2nd Saturday morning, checking in at 9:45.
Introductions are provided at 10 a.m. and the group is subdivided into teams of approximately 8-10 with an adult and sometimes student team leader.
The organizers provide 2-3 discussion questions for each team to discern during the Clean-Up.
Groups return at 11:40 a.m. for discussion and water, sometimes lunch.
Each group picks a spokesperson to summarize answers to the theme questions, which have ranged from the meaning of economic development to how volunteering impacts civil rights.
Activities end generally by 12 p.m.

2nd Saturday Oak Park Cleanup

by ubomag, Wednesday 30 of January, 2008 (20:27:36)

By Aaris A. Schroeder

Every 2nd Sat. morning, Brian Fischer who created 100 Minds and is a major part of sacramento.downtowngrid.com and works close in his Oak Park Community with the youth, churches, Business Association and also helps out with getting Oak Park to be more eco-friendly, eating healthier, creating safer nieghborhoods; starting with his own, working to get prostitutes off the streets and into healthier jobs and lifestyles and works with the community to build independent businesses so that Starbucks, Jamba Juice, SafeWay and Wal-Mart don't take over this fragile community will be marching throughout OakPark with high school students and the local community picking up garbage. In the past, they have shut down liquor stores, where there are too many on one street and right now, Brian is looking for local people that want to get involved with the youth.

This means, getting down with them and rapping with them about what they are about, what they want to do with their lives, where they are right now and talking about the struggles and wins you have had in your life all while picking up garbage off the street. This allows the local youth to respect their nirghborhood and have a sense of pride. It will also allow them to see that there are positive things happening in their community that they can be a part of aside from playing b-ball in the park or playing video games after school.

If you feel you can impact the youth and do something positive for your community, come on down and walk the Oak Park turf.
