Women Escaping A Violent Environment (WEAVE)
WEAVE
Description
WEAVE was established in 1978 as a nonprofit organization to serve domestic violence survivors and their families in Sacramento County. In 1986, WEAVE opened the Soroptimist Safehouse. The Safehouse remains the only state-recognized, confidential shelter serving all domestic violence victims in Sacramento County. In 1988, WEAVE became a dual agency when it added sexual assault services. In 1993, WEAVE expanded beyond crisis intervention and counseling services when it established school-based prevention services. In 1994, WEAVE dedicated the BT Collins Memorial Counseling Center, a facility that is still owned by WEAVE today. In 1999, WEAVE launched the Break the Silence public awareness campaign which encompassed five counties to increase awareness of domestic violence. In 1998 and 2001 WEAVE opened Thrift Stores to provide diversified revenues. In 2008, WEAVE celebrated 30 years of service to the Sacramento region. The organization has grown from a small, grassroots organization, to a nationally recognized organization providing innovative solutions to violence in the community. WEAVE has been honored for its efforts by many organizations, including the U.S. Department of Justice, Governor of the State of California, Human Rights Fair Housing Commission, Attorney General , President of the United States , and the Nonprofit Resource Center.
