"Green plate special" is a find for vegetarians

by alexis, Saturday 09 of May, 2009 (09:50:35)

This review is for Dad’s Kitchen on Freeport Boulevard.

I love eating outdoors, but the noise and care fumes associated with al fresco dining at many Midtown establishments makes it less appealing. Not so at Dad’s, where the patio is at the back of the restaurant and surrounded by trees and vines that block out the street noise and the presence of Freeport Bakery, which is within spitting distance.

The menu has much to offer vegetarians: veggie burgers, veggie hot dogs, veggie chili and several meatless sandwiches. The macaroni and cheese is a temptation for vegans wanting to cheat. The holy grail, though, is the green plate special – flavorful hummus, pita bread, spinach salad with delicious sesame dressing, and grilled quinoa “medallions.” If you’re like me and love quinoa but don’t know what to do with it, you’ll love this presentation. The grilled quinoa is also used in the veggie burger, but I prefer it as part of the green plate.

The fries are also good – thick-cut wedges cooked to a crispy doneness, they are available plain or with toppings like garlic Parmesan, blue cheese habanero or chili. One note: I found the veggie chili to be too spicy. If you like your food hot, you’ll love it, but if you prefer mild flavors, this might overwhelm.

Dad’s has Rubicon beer on tap and a small selection of bottled microbrews. The “lemon beer,” a combination of PBR and lemonade, is refreshing, sweet and my new favorite summer drink.

Just good food!

Tonight we had meatloaf, mac and cheese, and the blue plate special which was carnitas tacos.  The meatloaf and mac and cheese were excellent..wouldn't do anything different.  The carnitas were good..ate every bite but Dad's is better at the comfort food.

Love the atmosphere..casual.  Tonight was cold so the patio wasn't open.  The patio adds alot when the weather is nice but whe it is closed the seating is severlu limited.  Bummer!

LOVE DAD'S

Dad's Sandwich Shop

If what you need for lunch is a delicious sandwich then Dad's is it. I don't go there as often as I would like but it is great none the less. Zack, Alison and Sam, who own the tiny little spot on S street, have a wonderful thing going. It is located in a den of state office builings so the place gets packed for lunch. You have to wait for your sandwich but it is worth it.

I highly recomend Dad's Rueben and the Chunky Chicken sandwiches but I usually get Dad's Hot Classic with turkey with everything, grilled and dont forget the pepper plant sauce. Oh damn its good!

If you are feeling a bit adventurous and nostalgic for The King then try the Fat Elvis which is a grilled peanut butter, honey and banana sandwich on white bread. Just the way the Big E would have wanted it.

Dad's Rocks

I love me some some warm sandwiches. And these folks do it right. I think the one I like is the "working man" which has some kind of steaky-like meat, cheese, onions, aioli... HEAVEN on bread. Plus, the attitude of the folks there is the best. I respect their closing time:  "Beer 30."

Located on the outskirts of Midtown on S and 13th, Dad’s Sandwich Shop serves not only a large variety of sandwiches but also crisp salads, daily-made soups, bakery goods and a diverse selection of farmer’s market fruits and vegetables.  For beverages, you can pop a beer open, select a specialty coffee from Old Soul or one of your favorite sodas or juices.

Once adorned with graffiti art, this hole-in-the-wall is now a local favorite and if you stop by you will see locals out front enjoying a fresh brew and hearty sandwich.  The staff at Dad’s is quite inviting.  Made up mostly of owners Zac and Alison, who are husband and wife and Zac’s father, Sam, [you can call him ‘Dad’].  The three came up with the idea in ’03 and cleaned up the property and began business in ’04.

My favorite sandwich is the “Day After” sandwich, properly named for those long-nights of bar-hopping or attending music functions with brew in hand.   Waking up at noon and traveling down to Dad’s for this specialty turkey sandwich on organic wheat bread with spicy brown mustard and mayo, cream cheese, dried cranberries, red onion, tomato and lettuce is sure to get that hangover relief so you can get a move on your day.

There is a unique sandwich at Dad’s for everyone so come on down for lunch this week and discover why the locals call this place, “Dad’s.”
