5th Annual “Housewarming for the Unhoused”

Sacramento Self-Help Housing (SSHH) is proud to announce its 5th Annual winter donation drive titled “Housewarming for the Unhoused.” The annual drive-thru donation event will take place on Saturday, December 3 at the Cal Expo main gate loop from 8 a.m. to noon. In addition to housing more than 1,200 previously unhoused individuals each year – in apartments and transition homes managed by Sacramento Self-Help Housing – the nonprofit organization is projecting they will place between 275-300 more individuals into their own apartment units in 2023.

“The 2022 Point-In-Time Count told us what we already knew – there are significantly more unhoused people living on the streets of Sacramento and surrounding local areas,” explained John Foley, Executive Director of Sacramento Self-Help Housing. “Our staff works diligently all year long to help transition individuals in need into stable living environments. And, our annual ‘Housewarming for the Homeless’ donation drive is an easy way caring community members can help those on their path to identify long-term housing solutions.”

The continuing theme is “Warm it Up, Mix it Up” to encourage specific items for donation to help keep the served population both warm and well stocked as they transition to stable living environments. New or gently used items requested for “Housewarming for the Unhoused” include the following: blankets, bed sheets (single & twin preferred), wash cloths, towels (bath and kitchen), bed pillows, and kitchen appliances such as microwaves, toasters, coffee makers, mixers, and blenders. SSHH staff and dedicated volunteers will be on-hand to collect new and/or gently used items that will be distributed to hundreds of recently homeless individuals in Sacramento County.

The 2022 “Housewarming for the Unhoused” donation drive is generously supported Molina Healthcare, Dignity Health, HealthNet, and iHeart Media.

Sacramento Self-Help Housing is a nonprofit 501(c)3 agency dedicated to assist those who are unhoused or at risk of becoming so to find and retain stable and affordable housing, which is more critical than ever during the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fundraising event supports Sacramento Self-Help Housing and its efforts to identify positive solutions and workable alternatives for local community members dealing with homelessness or trying to break free from a cycle of unstable living situations.

Sacramento Self-Help Housing is a leader in the “housing first” model of homelessness response by providing shared housing and other supportive services. Sacramento Self-Help Housing also offers a “Renters Helpline” which includes the region’s fair housing enforcement program to address fair housing discrimination.
