With High Pulp

Northern California based Mr. December got its start as a side project “jam band”. Founding member Jimmy Papastathis was challenged by the Northern California hot spot Constable Jack’s owner to fill in for a last minute (sold out show) cancellation, just hours before start time. With the threat of complete distain from an audience expecting another act, Jimmy called on his arsenal of pro musician friends and scratched out a unanimously known set list. The crowd became restless watching these seemingly unfamiliar players setting up in place of the act they were expecting.

Then the music hit.

From the first note, heads were bobbing, feet began moving and slowly the audience left their seats and the dance floor was packed all night. Somewhere during the last set, the owner of the club fought his way to the stage to deliver a note with the words “New Years Eve?”… It was then and there that Jimmy knew he had something special.

Over the next year, Mr. December, who at that time had been operating as a side project band, was wooing audiences all over the Sacramento area. Soon, players from larger bands were asking to “sit in” at their shows. Some celebrity guests have included Frank Hannon (Tesla), Lydia Pense (Cold Blood), Annie Sampson (Stoneground), Tal Morris (CCR, Ronnie Montrose) and more. Their unique take on the tunes they were playing were captivating. Their front woman, Dana Moret, selected mostly songs sung by men and gave them an intriguing woman’s perspective. Songwriting came quickly to the group as they blended their selections of songs from previous projects and developed new ones for this act. Their Sacramento hit “Where’s the Break” received accolades from Big Brother and the Holding Company’s Sam Andrews (Janis Joplin) who said “I love this. Good concept. Dana knows how to relax and burn all at the same time. This band is really good!”
On New Years Eve 2006, the band decided that it was time to make Mr. December a full time project.
Securing members from Ian Shelter, Stoneground, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, Pablo Cruise and the MO.FUNKITY.HORN section, the band has a sound that blends the Rock feel from the 60’s the Soul of the 70’s, the Funk of the 80’s and some Alternative grooves of the 90’s.

They have regularly perform at the pertinent venues, festivals and events in the Sacramento area.

High Pulp – “It’s hard to imagine throwing on this LP and feeling anything less than joy. From the pink flamingos on the cover to the buoyant, flashy grooves embedded in each song, Bad Juice is the soundtrack to your carefree, balmy summer nights.” – KEXP

“High Pulp’s infusion of soul-based hiphop, R&B, and funk cannot be missed” – The Stranger

“Seattle’s fusion big band High Pulp’s debut… answers the new millennium’s post-trip-hop, -indie, -ambient, -drum & bass, etc. contemporary with vinyl sharp grooves, macramé arrangements, and session-level instrumentation” – Earshot Jazz

“There just aren’t many bands making music like this right now” – What’s Up! Magazine
