This popular FREE event is a day to honor the legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and celebrate not only her work, but also her iconic status for girls/women empowerment.

Location for the event is the tree-laden LCAC grounds at 2700 Front Street, just south of Broadway. (FREE PARKING AT 2300 FRONT ST)

DAYTIME: Featured in this daytime event will be performance from local traditional Son Jarocho and Folklórico groups. The Little Fridas Children’s Parade will return again as a favorite feature. Arts and crafts area for children will be facilitated by Crocker Museum, Brown Issues volunteers and Designing Chica will host a painting lesson. Over 24 local artisans and craft vendors will selling their goods in the mercado.

EVENING: The hugely-popular centerpiece activity of the afternoon is the FRIDA KAHLO LOOK-ALIKE CONTEST with Brown Issues Ambassador, Alma Lopez, as our emcee. Participants are encouraged to Interpret a painting in a favorite costume or dress in one of Kahlo’s many iconic styles and “bring out your inner Frida.” Sign-up is requested upon arrival. This is for adults, ages 16 and up only. The winner and runner up receive cash prizes. The evening will be topped off with dance instruction and dance party hosted by Dance on the Edge! A night of salsa, bachata, merengue and cumbia, you will not want to miss it!

Mexican food trucks and non alcoholic beverages beginning at 1PM; and beer, margaritas and wine for sale beginning at 5PM.

1-5PM: Kids and Family Crafts (face painting, dress up, arts and crafts, painting lesson)
2:30PM: Cascabel de Dos Rios (Son Jarocho group)
3:00PM: Danza de Nuevo Amanecer (Folklórico)
3:45PM: Little Frida Parade!
4:45PM: Music by DJ Stace
5:00PM: BAR OPENS/ Kids Area concludes
5:30PM: Adult Frida Look Alike Contest
7:00PM: DANCE ON THE EDGE lesson and dance fiesta!

"The City’s Recycling and Solid Waste Division this spring is offering a series of free in-person backyard composting seminars to help residents learn how to turn food scraps into compost right in their own backyard.

Attendees will learn about decomposition at a local community garden and discover how to recycle leaves, yard clippings, fruit, and vegetable scraps. Additionally, they’ll receive a demonstration on using a “Geobin” composter and learn about composting materials.

Tips will be shared on how to achieve the right balance of food, air, and moisture, how to maintain compost piles, and home gardening."

"City staff will be giving away free wood mulch to Sacramento residents on May 4 at the Sacramento Marina (2710 Ramp Way).

There will be a limit of one cubic yard of mulch per customer during the event, which will take place from 8 a.m. to noon or while supplies last.

Attendees can also get free bagged and loose compost, which can improve soil health."
