Historical performance, artifact unveiling, and reception honoring two women who shaped California’s fight for freedom — Mary Brown & Mary Ellen Pleasant

Saturday, November 8, 2025 | 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm | 1020 O St, Sacramento, CA

Join us on Nov. 8 for the unveiling of a new artifact coming to the California Museum’s “Women Inspire” exhibit. See and hear the story of the silver-plated chalice gifted to Mary Brown—the widow of famed abolitionist John Brown—in the 1880s by a group of formerly enslaved people, honoring the Brown family’s efforts in the fight for freedom.

Learn the extraordinary stories of Mary Brown and Mary Ellen Pleasant — two remarkable women whose lives were deeply connected to the fight for freedom and equality.

Historical performance by Emmy Award-winner Dr. Susheel Bibbs, celebrating Mary Ellen Pleasant’s legacy as the “Mother of Civil Rights in California”
