From Latin rhythms and European folk melodies to African drumming, the Crocker’s new Global Rhythms music series will have you dancing in your seat as you experience infectious beats and soulful melodies performed by acclaimed musicians from around the world.

The Brazilian sound of Sandy Cressman and her band Homenagem Brasileira (“homage to Brazil”) will have you moving in your seat, dreaming of the colors, spices, and electric energy of the Federative Republic’s rich musical tradition. Of her brisk and alluring style, The San Francisco Observer exclaimed, “Cressman pours out her love for the delightfully sensuous and melodious Brazilian lyrics .”

Singer, songwriter, and producer Quique Escamilla is fast becoming a star in Canada, where he won the 2015 Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year. Fusing musical traditions of his homeland (Chiapas, Mexico) with the modern styles of rock, ska, reggae, cumbia, and bolero, Quique’s passionate vocals, powerful messages, and dynamic performances connect and inspire audiences worldwide.

Legendary Nigerian bassist and bandleader Babá Ken – who has performed with such luminaries as Afrobeat creator FelaKuti and King Sunny Adé, and headlined the Lincoln Center, The Fillmore, and Yoshi’s – will be joined by his band for a night of joyful music and infectious African beats. Playing a variety of hand percussions as well as acoustic guitar with voices in harmony, Babá Ken Okulolo & The Nigerian Brothers will perform spirit-soaring music from their homeland.

"The City’s Recycling and Solid Waste Division this spring is offering a series of free in-person backyard composting seminars to help residents learn how to turn food scraps into compost right in their own backyard.

Attendees will learn about decomposition at a local community garden and discover how to recycle leaves, yard clippings, fruit, and vegetable scraps. Additionally, they’ll receive a demonstration on using a “Geobin” composter and learn about composting materials.

Tips will be shared on how to achieve the right balance of food, air, and moisture, how to maintain compost piles, and home gardening."

"City staff will be giving away free wood mulch to Sacramento residents on May 4 at the Sacramento Marina (2710 Ramp Way).

There will be a limit of one cubic yard of mulch per customer during the event, which will take place from 8 a.m. to noon or while supplies last.

Attendees can also get free bagged and loose compost, which can improve soil health."
