Description
The Hmong is an ethnic group originating from Southeast Asia. With little to no formal education, modern tools, and/or technologies, the Hmong lived a simple and quiet agricultural lifestyle, relying on mother nature for food, water, and shelter. However, as the Vietnam War, also known as the โSecret Warโ broke out in the 1960s, the Hmong were recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to fight against the communist forces of North Vietnam and Laos because of their superior knowledge of the surrounding mountain areas and hills. Since the war, the Hmong had fled Laos as refugees, resettling in many countries such as France, Australia, and United States.
To preserve the rich culture and tradition of the Hmong people, annual Hmong New Year celebrations are held throughout the states where some of the biggest festivals are held such as in various cities throughout California and at the River Centre in St. Paul, Minnesota. Since 2005, the Sacramento Hmong New Year, Inc. has held a Hmong New Year celebration, one of the largest Hmong New Year celebration in the entire country, at Cal Expo for the Hmong community.
โSacramento Hmong New Year, Inc. is a non-profit organization serving not only just the Hmong Community, but the diverse communities surrounding us in the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. Our mission is to preserve the richness of Hmong culture and tradition, provide opportunities for the youth with scholarships for higher education, cultural awareness, and promote the general welfare of the Hmong and surrounding communities in the Sacramento Metro.
