Oil painting technique made simple in a non-toxic, solvent-free environment.

This oil painting workshop is designed to help artist start oil painting or transition to a nontoxic studio environment, with introduction and discussion to unravel the complexity and difficulty of this traditional medium. Students will be guided through painting sessions using only non-toxic materials. Though the use of traditional solvent or modern day mediums will be covered during discussion, our painting session will accustom artists to using only environmentally friendly materials for a safer and healthier environment. Students will learn and execute techniques without the use of harmful solvent such as turpentine, OMS, and mediums containing volatiles. Artists will create their own paintings with the instructor’s help and guidance.

Day 1 // Introduction, drawing, blocking in: discussion of artist materials such as paints, surfaces, brushes, mediums, and oil painting techniques. Topics of discussion include advantages and disadvantages of oil paintings; challenges generally faced by artists when starting or transitioning to oil painting and a solvent free environment; handling paints in direct and layering techniques, and application of techniques such as glazes, scumbling, and impasto; the understanding of materials that are toxic to health or environment.

Day 2 // Painting session: creating an underpainting, discussion and demonstration of mixing techniques (color strings, value strings), opaque versus transparent, chroma, value relationships, composition, lost and found edges, and painting with guidance, and demonstration.

Day 3 // Painting session: finish painting, or create a foundation to finish painting at your time; tip and advice; Q and A
