The 2018 Sacramento Public Latte Art Tournament will start in late July.

Wake up and smell the coffee: The fifth annual Sacramento Public Latte Art Tournament (SPLAT) will kick off this month.

This year, event coordinator Jeremiah Frazier of Temple Coffee says SPLAT—which also partners with other local roasters like Chocolate Fish, Old Soul, Pachamama and Camellia—will open up the experience to amateurs. “We wanted to see more people participate who didn’t necessarily have the skill set of a barista,” he says.

As such, the months-long tournament will begin with a cupping challenge on July 26 at Temple’s S Street location, where contestants from all backgrounds will have five minutes to sniff and taste six cups of brewed coffee—five of which will be the same—before pointing the odd one out. The competitor with the quickest time will receive a prize valued at $75 and earn tournament points.

Later, during the latte art throwdowns, coffee lovers can watch as dozens of top baristas from around Northern California show off their mastery at designing objects like hearts, tulips and rosettes using milk. At the final battle in October, which traditionally coincides with Specialty Coffee Week, a tournament champion will be announced and win a Baratza coffee grinder and Unic Mira espresso machine (together, worth over $5,000).
