Verge Center for the Arts Summer Kids Studio Camp runs for six weeks from June to August. We have camp weeks for two different age groups, 6-9 year olds and 10-13 year olds. Every week is themed in relation to a current and interdisciplinary art practice, in addition to some having culturally rooted projects.

Camp runs from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Campers may be dropped off between after 9:00-10:00am in the morning and picked up between 3:00-4:00pm. Snacks are provided but please send your camper with a cold lunch.

IMMERSIVE SPACE: INSTALLATION ART

Kids will learn about the history of installation art and look at contemporary immersive art spaces. They will work individually and in groups to pick a theme, design an installation, and build components for it. Students will work on a theme of their choosing that is important to them.

Week 1: June 17th-21st 10-13 year olds

Week 4: July 15th-19th 6-9 year olds

PAPER MACHE CREATURES: PUPPETS & ALEBRIJES

Kids will learn the history of paper mache puppets and their use in theater, political demonstrations and art installations. They will also dive into the cultural aspects of paper mache sculptures from Mexico called alebrijes (like the ones from Coco!). They will learn how to construct an armature, cover, and paint their sculpture. They will work on small maquettes and in a large scale puppet or alebrije either collaboratively or individually. They will organize and host an exhibition with their work at the end of camp.

Week 2: June 24th-28th 10-13 year olds

Week 5: July 29th-August 2nd 6-9 year olds

ART ON THE WALLS: MURALS

Kids will learn the basics of painting and how to make a mural in multiple panels. They will design their own mural and work on it collectively and learn the process of preparing their their board, drawing, and painting with acrylic and tempera. We will tour the surrounding neighborhood to look at murals and will have a local muralist as a guest speaker. The students will either have their mural displayed in the classroom during the last day of camp.

Week 3: July 8th-12th 10-13 year olds

Week 6: August 5th-August 9th 6-9 year olds
