Sacramento Comedy Festival
Sacramento Comedy Festival is an annual event in October
Friday, October 6 – Sunday, October 8, 2017
The festival expands this year from a single location to nine locations, including all full-time Sacramento comedy venues: Sacramento Comedy Spot, Punch Line Comedy Club, Laughs Unlimited Comedy Club and ComedySportz Improv. Additional comedy shows will be held at Crest Theater, Momo Lounge, Starlite Lounge, Luna’s Cafe, and Ooley Theater.
This year’s lineup features something for everyone:
Recent America’s Got Talent finalists, David and Leeman, will appear with local comedian Cheryl “The Soccer Mom” Anderson at Downtown’s Crest Theater. David and Leeman are a comedy and magic duo that floored the judges on America’s Got Talent. Leeman Parker started his comedy career in Sacramento with the sketch and improv group, Free Hooch Comedy Troupe.
The festival features five nights of national headlining comedians. For the first time in the festival’s history, these comedians will be playing across all of Sacramento’s full-time comedy clubs. The Sacramento Comedy Spot will host Myq Kaplan of Last Comic Standing and America’s Got Talent, and Science Comedian Brian Malow. Mo Mandel, host of truTV’s Barmageddon and Rick Overton, a 30-year veteran actor, writer, and Emmy Award-winning comedian, will both appear at Laughs Unlimited.
The Punch Line Sacramento is hosting the festival’s Lavender Lights – Gay and Proud show on Wednesday, October 7th. Headlining the show is Ronn Vigh (Last Comic Standing) with Michael Patten and Irene Tu.
Stand-Up Comedy Competition
This year marks the festival’s third-annual Stand-Up Comedy Competition. This year’s event features 60 participants, the most in the history of the competition. Comedians from all over the country are competing for a $2,000 total purse with $1,000 going to the winner. The competition preliminary rounds will be held at Sacramento Comedy Spot beginning Tuesday, October 6 through Thursday, October 8. The semi-finals take place at Laughs Unlimited in Old Sacramento on Friday October 9, hosted by 2013 winner Trenton Davis. Michael Patten, the 2014 winner, will host the final round on Saturday, October 10, also at Laughs Unlimited.
Improv comedy is represented with the Bay Area group, 5 Play, at Midtown’s Sacramento Comedy Spot on Friday, October 2. ComedySportz Sacramento presents an all-ages festival edition show at their Arden-based theater on Sunday afternoon, October 4.
Comic Book and Sci-Fi Comedy
For comic book and sci-fi fans, there’s Emperor Ming’s Mercilessly Spicy Wings …and Other Tales. This new, all-ages, multimedia comedy show about sci-fi, werewolves, secret agents, and superheroes is featured on Sunday afternoon, October 4, at Sacramento Comedy Spot. All ages are welcome.
