Two-time Grammy Award-Winning violinist, Mads Tolling is a former member of Turtle Island Quartet and bassist Stanley Clarke’s band. Mads has performed with Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Paquito D’Rivera and Leo Kottke, and his own projects have received glowing reviews in SF Chronicle, Washington Post and DownBeat Magazine. Mads has teamed up with guitarist Jeff Massanari for a night of unforgettable jazz. After extensive tours around the US the two will pay tribute to the greatest jazz violinist of all time, including Stephane Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty, Stuff Smith and Svend Asmussen.
The duo will present new takes on American standards that were recorded by some of Mads’ violin heroes growing up. Tunes like “Honeysuckle Rose,” “Stardust” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing” are part of the setlist, and so are compositions by Danish jazz icon Svend Asmussen and gypsy jazz masters Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. Mads was in close contact with Asmussen, who gave Mads much of his personal sheet music collection, before he passed away at age 100 two years ago. The duo will pay a special homage to Asmussen this evening.
