The question of whether Sacramento needs a “strong mayor” will go to voters again in November. The “strong mayor” model of government would change the role of the city’s top elected official. Local historian and author, William Burg, will be discussing this issue on September 23, 2020.
William has written seven books and about a hundred articles about Sacramento’s history. His most recent, Wicked Sacramento.
About Wicked Sacramento
In the early 1900s, Sacramento became a battleground in a statewide struggle. On one side were Progressive political reformers and suffragettes. Opposing them were bars, dance halls, brothels and powerful business interests. Caught in the middle was the city’s West End. One of the major issues of this era was political corruption, that reformers felt was due to the city’s “Strong Mayor” charter. This talk will focus on the “Strong Mayor” period, 1893-1911, and the “Commission System” that followed it, and how governance changed in Sacramento in response to the social movements of the Progressive Era.
