Learn how to transform food scraps into compost at these eleven free spring seminars.
The City’s Recycling and Solid Waste Division this spring is offering a series of free in-person backyard composting seminars to help residents learn how to turn food scraps into compost right in their own backyard.
Attendees will learn about decomposition at a local community garden and discover how to recycle leaves, yard clippings, fruit, and vegetable scraps. Additionally, they’ll receive a demonstration on using a “Geobin” composter and learn about composting materials.
Tips will be shared on how to achieve the right balance of food, air, and moisture, how to maintain compost piles, and home gardening.
There are eleven sessions scheduled this spring, with two sessions on each Saturday:
Saturday, April 13: 8-9 a.m. and 10-11 a.m., Wild Rose Garden, 5200 Kankakee Drive.
Wednesday, April 24: 6-7 p.m., Brooks Truitt Garden, 19th Street & Q Street.
Saturday, April 27: 8-9 a.m. and 10-11 a.m., Martin Luther King Jr. Garden, 3668 Martin Luther King Wednesday, May 1: 6-7 p.m., Blackbird Park Garden, 3765 Hovnanian Drive.
Wednesday, May 15: 6-7 p.m., Sojourner Truth Garden, 7365 Gloria Drive.
Saturday, May 18: 8-9 a.m. and 10-11 a.m., Southside Park Community Garden, 5th Street & W Street.
Saturday, June 1: 8-9 a.m. and 10-11 a.m., Mirasol Village Garden, 601 Pipevine Street.
“The City has a curbside organics recycling program, but many residents are interested in composting themselves or want to learn about food waste recycling,” said Jesa David, spokesperson for the Division. “We want to show residents how to put their own food scraps to use and what compost can do, and our community gardens are an excellent place to see how it works.”
The event is free to attend, but residents should register by emailing sacrecycle@cityofsacramento.org to ensure there are adequate supplies. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Registered attendees who are City residents will receive a free Geobin composter, a backyard composting guide and kitchen food scrap pail (one each per household).
The seminars are offered in partnership with the Community Garden Program and Master Gardeners. Residents interested in the garden program can call (916) 808-4943 for more information.
