& Snuff Redux with Ember Valley, Indigo State

Named for the forgotten trolley tracks that run like veins throughout Los Angeles, the young rock band the Tracks boldly play furious, fast music that flies in the face of a genre seems to have lost its way.

Frontman Venancio Bermudez, bassist Felipe Contreras, drummer Jimmy Conde, and guitarist Johnny Santana united over their shared love of rock & roll and are the latest act to contribute to the rich history of Chicano bands, playing music that is directly influenced by their background growing up as the children of undocumented immigrants in East LA. Their music recalls the defiant optimism of working class bands that came before them and their sound reminds us to find the joy in dancing to loud music as the ultimate form of rebellion. The group’s ferocious live set has seen them playing everywhere from backyard parties in Boyle Heights to opening for Hinds, and they performed two songs live on camera in the TV show I Love Dick from Transparent creator Jill Soloway, which premiered in Spring of 2017. Most recently, the Tracks were featured alongside SZA in MasterCard’s 2018 Start Something Priceless campaign. Caitlin White compared the band’s sonic pop punch to the Strokes in her piece for Uproxx, and Maria Sherman opened her Remezcla feature on the group with “Very rarely does a band resonate so much that it feels like a shift is happening.” The group received a lengthy profile in LA Weekly from Jonny Coleman, and LA Times music critic Randall Roberts wrote “the Tracks connect the black-and-white past with a full-color, and furious, present.” The Tracks’ debut album Treasured Memories, produced by Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, FIDLAR, Guards), was released in November 2018 to critical acclaim by NPR station KCRW, and was featured on lifestyle & culture sites Uproxx and Remezcla.

Thats what 90.3 KEXP’s Morning Show host John Richards said about Seattle rockers Snuff Redux on August 3rd, as they reached the finish line of a marathon summer. On June 8th, they released their debut album ‘Denim American’ to the world. The next day they embarked on their second US tour, and in true DIY spirit, faced the classic set backs of shows falling through, as well as their van breaking down in the middle of nowhere (more than once). Snuff still made it to and from New York, and made the long drive back home, where they performed at the legendary Easy Street Records, where the album took the top spot in vinyl sales that week. Later on, on that day in August, Snuff performed to their biggest crowd yet, as they opened KEXP’s Concerts at The Mural Series, sharing a bill with hometown heroes TacocaT.

The songs that comprise ‘Denim American’ are love letters to Snuff’s hometown of Seattle, and they take great pride in their PNW roots. Sonically, it contains some of the hallmark squalls of the cities forebears. Snuff is not afraid of fuzz or chorus pedals, but are not defined by them. They have a knack for pop that is consistently present no matter how loud their Peavey’s are. They believe in Peace, Love and Denim.

Through all the activity and noise in Southern California’s music scene, Indigo State is a well kept secret. Founded in 2015, the group had a slow start, holding off playing shows until January the following year. During this time though, a solid set of songs were composed by all three members; Gabriel Barraza (Guitar/Vocal), Alex Grant (Bass), and Nico Vasquez (Drums). With songs that depict lost love, lust, isolation, and social unrest shrouded in explosive instrumentals, the group caught fire in the Los Angeles underground music scene. Known for their fiery hypnotic live performances, the group is now moving out of the house shows and into the clubs. Catch them while you can because Indigo State is only rising from here on out.

Ember Valley began to take shape when guitarists Sohail Al-Jamea and Chris Gray met and started writing music together in the summer of 2017. Wetzel joined them in January 2018, and bassist and recent San Diego transplant Tom Lazet completed the lineup that spring. The band has worked with a revolving cast of drummers, with Jenny Klug of Clevers sitting in on four of the EP’s five songs.

Their first single, “Home,” is featured in the McClatchy Studios / Facebook Watch documentary series “Ground Game: Texas,” an episodic documentary video series following Beto O’Rourke along the campaign trail as he challenges incumbent Senator Ted Cruz.

The band releases their EP Debut, “Welcome Back,” in March with live performances to come later this year.
