A night of Sacramento’s finest rock & roll, celebrating Old I’s 85th birthday!

58 Fury – Here comes the doctor/ Evil step and voodoo dial.

Behold, the Return of ’58 FURY! After a hiatus of more than 20 years, this Sacramento-based band of heavy rockers comes roaring back with its unique and potent mix of comic-book horror and groovy, ’70s-style riff-o-rama.

Formed in 1983, ’58 Fury initially made waves on the local scene on the strength of its raw, raunchy musical approach—a push-back response to the then-burgeoning hair-metal and glam rock scene. “While all of our friends were listening to Ratt and Quiet Riot, we were digging hard on old Deep Purple, Zep and the Stones,” says lead singer Darin Wood, who, along with guitarist Ned Hammad, forged the lion’s share of the band’s material. Prodigiously talented lead guitarist Chris Estes, pianist/organist Virgil McKenzie, drummer Bill “Skrumble” Hunting and bassist Brent Converse rounded out the original line up. “We were high school brothers who would just as soon rehearse in Darin’s dad’s living room as go hang out down by the river and drink beer,” says Hammad. After a few years honing their chops in the local club scene, the Furies managed to attract the attention of a handful of music biz movers and shakers, notably Brian Wheat and Frank Hannon of Tesla, who produced an early demo for the band. A switch in the rhythm section was followed by a major label deal with A&M Records in 1987. Though the deal would end within a couple of years with no material released, the band cemented its place as one of the region’s hottest live acts, creating a creepy, atmospheric spectacle of sludgy, layered guitar and organ, underpinned by rolling bass lines and thunderous, funky drumming. And over it all, there was Wood’s deep, emotional, blues-wailing roar. Alas, by 1992, ’58 Fury began to shed members, with a core group soldiering on for a time as Soul Motor (a precursor of sorts to Soulmotor, the ongoing music project helmed by Wood and Brian Wheat), then as H.A.G., before finally deciding to pack it in.

Flash forward to 2013, Wood, Hammad, Estes, McKenzie have re-teamed at the behest of original skinsman Bill Hunting. Together with new bassist (and old friend) James Pope, the band tested the waters with a pair of local shows to overwhelmingly positive response. “It was even more badass that we had even dared to imagine,” says Wood. “There were more than a few of our old friends who welled up that first night back.” It was at a subsequent gig, when one of those old friends, the aforementioned Brian Wheat, caught the band and was bowled over by Fury’s characteristic eerie crunch-groove. And it is at Wheat’s request that ’58 Fury appears in a special showcase, opening for Tesla, Sept. 28 at Lincoln, Ca.’s Thunder Valley Casino. “This is the first time we’ve shared a stage with Tesla since probably 1986, back when they were called City Kidd,” says Wood. “You can bet we’re gonna bring it like we ain’t never brought it.”
