Description
Souls of the City Dia de los Muertos Festival Returns to Old Sacramento for a Night of Tradition and Community Connection October 26th.
On Saturday, October 26th, from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Old Sacramento will come alive with the vibrant colors, music, and ancient traditions of Dia de los Muertos at the 13th annual Souls of the City Festival. Founded and organized by Sol Collective in partnership with The Center for Sacramento History, Souls of the City is Sacramento’s largest Dia De Los Muertos celebration. Come together with friends, family, and neighbors to honor the past, celebrate the present, and create memories for the future with live performances, captivating art installations, community vendors, and more!
Deriving from Mesoamerican traditions throughout Mexico and Central America, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead is a tradition celebrating and honoring the lives of relatives and ancestors past. Sol Collective’s annual Souls of the City festival and cultural arts programming offers hands-on education about the deep-rooted history and traditions of Dia de los Muertos.
At the heart of the festival is a traditional ceremony and procession led by Sacramento’s Maquilli Tonatiuh Aztec Dancers. Their powerful song and dance promise to transport attendees into the ancient landscape of Dia de los Muertos honoring the spirits of loved ones passed. Attendees are also invited to take part in Dia de los Muertos traditions including sugar skulls, floral crowns, altar building, and more. Adding to the vibes will be musical performances by local musicians and bands.
Sol Collective believes that through open education and sharing of cultures that respect, understanding, and equity are cultivated. This form of education separates cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. We encourage community members of all backgrounds to come out, learn the history, and participate in honoring their loved ones that have passed. Attendees, young and old, can participate in the event at no cost by bringing pictures and cherished items of your loved ones to place on the community altars, creating a collective tapestry of memories and stories.
