“Incandescent Umbra” – Featuring Figurative Oil Painter – Michelle Dahl
(Sacramento, CA. February 8th – March 4th, 2023)
ARTHOUSE is proud to present the art exhibition “Incandescent Umbra” at ARTHOUSE Gallery on historic R. Street in Sacramento, February 8th – March 4th, 2023.
Please join us as we feature the figurative oil paintings of Michelle Dahl at ARTHOUSE on R Gallery, 1021 R. Street in Sacramento. The opening reception including an opportunity to meet the artist is Saturday, February 10th from 5:00 – 8:00pm.
“Incandescent Umbra” is as an examination into the experience of creativity and consciousness through a series of impressionistic and realistic figurative oil paintings. The question of conscious self and the id, the unconscious self, must also comport itself with Dahl’s neurodivergence – not quite a third party in the debate, but a distortion in the boundaries between Self and Id. Consciousness is the spirit that powers the body, and creativity seems to ride artists the way ghosts possess people, so where then does creativity reside?
Michelle Dahl’s work explores human behavior and the origins of creativity within consciousness. She intends to make work that can be easily read so viewers can identify with the individuals within the narrative. This includes utilizing live model references to convey believable subjects while taking liberties in color and lighting to point to the narrative of both conscious and subconscious experience.
Michelle Dahl (b. 1983) is a life-long Sacramento region artist. After a disabling back injury, she looked to art as a full-time practice and returned to Sierra Community College, where she graduated with honors with an A.S. in Studio Arts from Rocklin, CA in 2019. Her work has been published in California-based editorials such as ShoutoutLA and MoosicEntertainment, as well as the UK’s Aurum Journal. She participated in numerous group exhibitions including Sac Open Studios, Big Names Little Art, as well as her solo show 100 Portraits. She served as Board member for Willapa Heritage Foundation, was a resident artist at The Art Studios, curator for The Gallery by We Are Sacramento, and founded the organization Career Creatives. Michelle also teaches oil painting and drawing skills through regular workshops throughout the Sacramento region.
In addition to the Gallery Show, ARTHOUSE resident artists will open their studios to the public for Second Saturday, February 10th from 5:00- 8:00pm.
