Description
Join us in welcoming the artist Shani Zuberi! “Route of Roots” opens on First Friday, February 7th, from 5 to 7 PM.
Shani Zuberi is a digital media artist whose work intertwines history, identity, and storytelling. Born in Fairfield and raised across multiple cities, Shani found her roots in Sacramento at the age of eight, embracing the city’s rich history and vibrant landscape as her own. While she calls herself a first-generation Sacramentan, her journey has been shaped by experiences from many places, which she channels into her art.
Shani creates work that reimagines classic art through a deeply personal lens. Her artistic practice began during the pandemic, when she discovered the wealth of public domain images available through museums and libraries. Fascinated by the accessibility of these resources, she began incorporating her face and skin tone into iconic artworks, reframing the narratives and creating bold, thought-provoking pieces that connect the past with her own identity.
Shani’s work is a love letter to the cultural and historical stories that shape Sacramento, a city she adores and continues to invest in through her volunteer work and community outreach. Whether through art or advocacy, she strives to leave a meaningful mark on her community while celebrating the beauty of reimagining history in her own way.
