The Other Place @ Red Museum
an evening of ambient music featuring r beny, shipwreck detective, Venetian Veil, and Yseulde

The Other Place is an evening of ambient music featuring r beny, shipwreck detective, Venetian Veil, and Yseulde, graciously hosted by The Red Museum.

r beny is the project of Bay Area native Austin Cairns. Cairns’s early work was a study in naturalistic solitude, but his work has trended towards a more plaintive, intimate space, culminating in the beautiful Echo’s Verse (2019 Dauw). I (PJ) highly recommend it, and have wanted to see Austin perform in person for a long time. It promises to be stunning.

shipwreck detective is Devanand Bhat, a San Francisco based performer (and member of Isles) whose most recent album, 11 Terrestrial Movements (2019 Lavender Sweep), concerns itself with the stories of the land. If I had to characterize Dev’s drones on this album, it would be dry and austere, like traveling in slow motion through a desert.

Venetian Veil are a fixture in Sacramento’s vast noise scene and tiny ambient scene. They are Susan Hunt and Jim Willig, former members of Sacramento blackgaze staples (waning). Their work is primarily very dark. A possible known frame of reference I would offer is Neil Young’s Dead Man score via the Cocteau Twins. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform in Davis earlier this month, and it was spectacular. I’m very excited to have them joining us.

Yseulde is PJ Ex. I’m unwilling to get super effusive about my own work. It’s depressing and pretty, and I use big, colorful projections.

The Red Museum is a venue specializing in underground and outre music and arts performance. It is run and sponsored by a group of very kind, hard-working patrons of whom I am quite fond.

July 27th, 2019 at 7 PM, BYOB. Be advised that this is an evening of quiet and reflective music. Ambient music can have difficulty competing with even quiet conversation. If you choose to attend, please make an effort to be mindful of the performers and other audience members during the performances, and take conversations outside.
