Featuring Black Map, Among the First, Brave Coyote, Infinite Sleep

Will Haven’s sixth full-length album and first for minus HEAD Records, the aptly titled Muerte (Spanish for “death”), feels like the beginning for the Sacramento quartet—Grady Avenell [singer], Jeff Irwin [guitar], Adrien Contreras [bass], and Mitch Wheeler [drums]. However, the band’s origins can be traced back to 1995 when they first emerged as a staple in their hometown’s storied underground. For the past two decades-plus, they’ve existed on the fringe of extreme music championing an apocalyptic amalgam of metal, noise, hardcore, and alternative all their own. Along the way, they unleashed a string of seminal and influential albums kicked off by 1997’s El Diablo and WHVN two years later. Between tours with everyone from Slipknot to Deftones, Carpe Diem proved an influential milestone in 2001, while avowed fans and scene compatriots Chino Moreno and Far’s Shaun Lopez co-produced The Hierophant during 2007. Slipknot percussionist Chris Fehn assumed bass duties on the 2011 opus Voir Dire, which landed among Metal Hammer’s “Top 50 Albums of the Year.”

Following the 2015 EP Open Mind to Discomfort, the boys secretly recorded at Pus Cavern Studios in Sacramento, CA with Joe Johnston engineering and co-producing alongside Jeff in 2017. They pieced together a corrosive, chaotic, and cohesive vision that never relents over its 11 tracks. It begins on the bruising first single “Hewed With The Brand” carries through the trudging psychedelic sludge of “No Escape” featuring YOB’s Mike Scheidt and culminates on the six minute-plus epic finale “El Sol” co-written by Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter.

Black Map creates music driven by the pulse of their early genesis as a trio who packed itself into a rehearsal room with pure intentions, a 12-pack and a boundary-smashing lack of prohibitions or rules. Their commitment is to each other, to what feels right; to meditation on big riffs that lurch and churn, dripping with atmosphere, powering bold and evocative statements. Strip away pretension, forego the focus on shiny perfectionism, and the heavy rock roots of massive guitars, drums, bass and vocals evoke primal feelings and channel universal urges more complicated styles seldom touch.

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, but in the case of Black Map, the destination beckoning from within the soundscape of their songs is someplace much less literal, ‘though no less devilishly foreboding.

Black Map is the union of three established Northern California rock musicians, driven by a shared dedication to big riffs, big drums and powerful, straight-ahead, all enveloping rock n’ roll. Black Map consists of the versatile voice and walloping bass groove of Ben Flanagan (Trophy Fire), the wall-of-sound big riff histrionics of guitarist Mark Engles (dredg) and the unstoppable driving force and tasteful skill of drummer Chris Robyn (Far).

Among the First – Individually coming from very different musical backgrounds Among the First was formed in early 2016 by Allen Wheeler (guitar), Taylor Klisiewicz (drums), and Nick Herst (bass) as an outlet for a collection of years of versatile musical experience and influence. With inspiration coming from a vast catalog of musical and creative influences including but not limited to NIN, Sevendust, Papa Roach, In This Moment and others, ATF has managed to carve out a powerful, heart felt, and intense musical experience that they will soon be taking to the local, national, and eventually global market.

Over the course of 15 years the members of ATF and have collectively toured and or shared the stage with the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, Steel Panther, Papa Roach, Static X, Machine Head, Otep, Otherwise, Trapt, and many others.
After the successful release of their self titled debut EP, as well as the addition of Steve Hatch (vocals) to its ranks, ATF is currently in the beginning pre production on material for their next effort due out mid 2019. Be on the lookout for news, studio, and tour updates.

Infinite Sleep formed in 2011 in San Jose, CA. What started as a recording project, with friends trading music ideas through e-mail evolved into a full-fledged band. They have self-released 2 EPs, 1 full-length album and 1 single. The band gives their all in every show they play and are dedicated to sharing their passion for music any way they possibly can. Currently, the band is putting the final touches on their second full-length album and view it as their most complete effort and the culmination of everything the band has experienced to this point.
