Description
Public Land Gallery is excited to present End User, the first solo exhibition by Sacramento-based artist Cella Costanza. Inspired by the expansive mesas, vast skies, and weathered structures of Northern New Mexico, her work explores the relationship between humans and their constructed interpretations of nature. In End User, Costanza reimagines the tire as a contemporary cylinder seal, pressing ephemeral messages into the earth. These impressions tell stories of creation, maintenance, and destruction, as if the land itself participates in the communication. Rolled out, the tires inscribe six-foot impressions—or patterns extending for miles—into the soil, blending language and form. At rest, they become monumental objects layered with symbols that evoke human intervention and natural processes.
Details like a toothbrush and a lily flower in the tread reference themes of hand pollination and care, while etched wordplay and poems shift meaning as they repeat, dissolve, and reform, challenging the viewer’s perception of language.
Born in 1990 in Taos, New Mexico, Cella Costanza is an MFA candidate at UC Davis and holds a BFA in Painting from the California College of the Arts.
The show opens with a reception on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 6–8 PM, and will run through March 27, 2025. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Join us on February 1 to meet the artist and experience this evocative series.
