UPCYCLED!: Turning Waste to Art

What happens to your cereal boxes, used papers, and plastic bags after using them once? Where does it go?

We live in a time where carbon emissions have skyrocketed within a single decade, about 8 million tons of plastic and other non-degradable waste enters our oceans every year, and entire ecosystems vanish due to human-caused practices, such as deforestation, commercial fishing, and overconsumption. It is time we stand together for each other and for our planet. Even during this unprecedented time when we are all at home, there is so much we can do to help our Earth.

Our UPCYCLED! Summer Camp program is designed to engage kids in eco-friendly art projects that encourage creativity, self-expression, and resourcefulness. We will use many nontraditional supplies to make art, such as recycled paper, plastic bags, food coloring, tissue paper, and more items you may already have at home! Lessons are also designed to introduce art concepts, such as color theory and composition. Alongside making fun projects, kids will participate in daily eco-talks, which give them a chance to learn more about their environment, how to reduce waste on a daily basis, and how to develop an earth-conscious mindset. The ultimate purpose of this class is to teach kids that no one is too small to make a difference or have an artistic voice in the fight against climate change.

When:

This class is from August 3-7th, 2020.

Our camp schedule will change from an all-day camp to 3-hour live sessions, in the mornings, and an “open office hour” afterward.

How:

We will be using a combination of two platforms, Zoom and Edmodo. We will send you all information about setting up accounts on those two as soon as possible. Zoom will facilitate online face-to-face interactions through an iPad or computer and will serve as a tool for instruction, demonstrations, and other engagement. Edmodo will be a platform to share tutorials, videos, alternative activities etc. so parents and kids can access them anytime.

We will make a materials pack at Verge that can be picked up by guardians.  In-Store Shopping & Curbside Pickup are available at Blick Art Supplies at their Howe Ave location if you would like extra supplies.
