    Dr. Emily Kalvass Chiropractic

    Posted to March 27th, 2013

Chiropractic is a great way to achieve optimal wellness, relieve aches and pains, correct postural problems, decrease stress and stay feeling young. I would be happy to help you with any health related issues and accomplish your highest level of function and performance. If there is a specific problem I will find out exactly what is wrong and let you know what can be done to correct it and how long that will take. My mission is to give you an honest evaluation and come up with treatment plan that works to help you in the best way possible. The majority of conditions treated are neck and back related pains which will typically get great results with conservative care. Other cases I have great success treating are:

    • Headaches
    • Jaw problems (TMJ dysfunction)
    • Pregnant women with back pain
    • PMS related pains
    • Athletic injuries
    • Disc problems
    • Foot related issues such as plantar fasciitis
    • Carpal tunnel
    • Scoliosis
    • Whiplash from car accidents

By adjusting the spine or other joints it will allow you better movement and the nervous system to function optimally. I also emphasize therapeutic massage and exercise therapy to re-train the muscles and make sure the bones stay in alignment. My focus is to fix the underlying cause of your problem and help your body to ultimately heal itself.

I earned my B.S. from University of California at Davis and my Doctor of Chiropractic degree (D.C.) from Palmer Chiropractic College West. I have additional training in dealing specifically with disc problems, nutrition, rehabilitation and use of various physical therapy.

“May God so direct the skillful use of my hands that I may bring strength to the sick, relief to the suffering, peace of mind to the anxious and the inspiration to mankind to attain bountiful health that we may live this life to the fullest expression of its innate endowments. I therefore solemnly swear to uphold these principles and precepts to the best of my ability, so help me God.”

    Meet Dr. O’Brien

I can honestly say that many of my patients have said they’ve had their best dental experience in my office.

I strive for perfection, using high quality products, techniques and lab services. Cosmetic procedures, whether placing a natural looking tooth restoration or enhancing a smile with veneers are my specialties. My caring and sensitive nature make my patients want to come back.

We educate and inform our patients, instilling confidence and providing comfort; nitrous oxide and back-massage units are among the amenities provided. By scheduling patient’s one at a time it allows my full attention to each individual. I’m proud of my skilled and supportive staff that genuinely cares about my patients.

I’ve been in practice 16 years having received my Doctorate in Dentistry from U.C. San Francisco in 1992.

On a personal note, I enjoy entertaining friends, gym time, cycling, interior decorating, furniture refinishing, and my family

    Do you want to:
    Feel happier, better about yourself?
    Have more satisfying relationships?
Let go of anger, fear or “old baggage”?

I’d like to help you reach your goals. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCS18899) with 25 years experience in the counseling field. My passion is people. I love listening to people’s stories, and developing an understanding of how they view themselves and their worlds. I love helping people discover what changes they can make in their lives that will make a difference, and then giving them the tools they need to make those changes themselves.

I believe in focusing on what changes can be made in the here and now, to improve our present circumstances and enhance our opportunities for success in the future. While we cannot change the past, we can learn to change the ways in which we think and feel about the past, allowing old wounds to be healed and life today to be transformed.

When things in our lives aren’t going well, we often think it’s the situation that is making us feel badly. The way I see it, it’s the way we perceive those situations that influences how we feel. Whether we are aware of them or not, we all have beliefs about life that affect how we feel about ourselves and influence our relationships with everyone around us. These beliefs may be positive and helpful, or they might be negative and limiting. People often develop negative beliefs when they have had difficult experiences. Once we develop these negative beliefs, it’s very easy for us to find proof that they’re true. We tend to see what we expect to see.

The problem with negative beliefs is that they’re usually not true! Just because we believe something doesn’t make it so. My approach is called Cognitive Therapy. I will help you determine what negative beliefs are getting in your way, and discover what is really true about you. Developing more accurate beliefs can help you feel better about yourself and allow you to create more fulfilling relationships with others. It can help you excel in your career, achieve your goals and realize your fullest potential.

    Specializing in:

EMDR Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
We’ve all had experiences that affect us deeply. Sometimes we have experiences that are traumatic in nature. We may have been in a car accident or been the victim of crime or abuse. We may have had experiences that have caused us to fear or avoid certain situations, or feel badly about ourselves. When that is the case, it often seems like anything that reminds us of that experience is felt very strongly, out of proportion to the actual situation. That is because of the way the brain stores traumatic memories. They don’t fade over time like other memories. They get stuck. They are re-experienced full strength, sometimes in the form of nightmares or flashbacks, or as unusually strong reactions to people or situations. EMDR can help the brain process those traumatic memories so they fade and become less emotionally charged. This process can often achieve results more quickly than ordinary talk therapy can.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Moving your eyes from side to side stimulates both sides of your brain, and helps your brain make new connections. It helps the logical, rational side of your brain communicate with the part where the memories are stuck, and facilitates the development emotional resolution. It helps you let go of the trauma and put it in the past where it belongs. For more information on EMDR, please visit the EMDR International Association’s website at emdria.org.

    SAND TRAY THERAPY
Sometimes it’s difficult to put our feelings into words. At times, we may not even be sure what we feel. Sandtray therapy provides us with an opportunity to know ourselves on a deeper level, to step away from ourselves and observe our inner world from the outside. Just as a picture says a thousand words, a sandtray can provide meaningful insight into inner experiences, conflicts, and desires. It can be very validating to create an image that so clearly represents our inner experience, that previously had no mode of expression. Once these aspects of the self are identified, they can be shared, experienced and changed in ways that were previously unavailable. Familiar, “stuck” patterns may begin to shift, and new, more satisfying ways of being can emerge.

In sandtray therapy, we use a container of sand with a blue bottom and a multitude of miniature objects. These objects include people, animals, buildings, bridges, plants, rocks, etc. You choose from these miniatures and create an image or “world” in the sand. As we explore your world together, you decide what significance each object has and what relationship they have to each other. From this, you can enhance your understanding of yourself, your feelings and what is most important to you in life. Together, we develop a plan to help you make use of this new awareness and move closer toward achieving your goals.

    GOTTMAN METHOD OF COUPLE’S THERAPY
The Gottman Method of couple’s therapy is based on Dr. John Gottman’s twenty-five years of research in what makes marriages succeed or fail. From this research, Dr. Gottman has created a type of therapy that emphasizes a nuts-and-bolts approach to improving marriages. Using this method you and your mate will learn about “the four horsemen of the apocalypse”, namely defensiveness, criticism, contempt and stonewalling, and develop tools to replace these behaviors with more positive and relationship strengthening behaviors. You will rebuild the friendship that originally brought you and your companion together, and develop increased levels of fondness and admiration. You will practice tools for conflict resolution and learn new ways to dialogue about perpetual problems. These techniques can help you to create shared symbolic meaning, mesh your life dreams and avoid relationship gridlock.
